Dr. Carlson is a professor of English at UCSB, specializing in British Romanticism, theories of race & sexuality, and the Wollstonecraft/Godwin/Shelley family. She is the director of the "Literature & the Mind" group at UCSB. The group uses literature to explore the central themes of neuroscience including memory, the self, language, emotion, and consciousness. Training & awards: Dr. Carlson has degrees in English from Pacific Lutheran University and the University of Chicago. She was the William Rainey Harper Instructor in the Humanities at the University of Chicago before joining the faculty at UCSB. She has won the Keats-Shelley Association award, the American Council of Learned Societies fellowship, and was elected a member of the MLA Division of Romanticism.
